Ultima 7 had a rather ambitious inventory system. The rub was a matter of organization. Eventually this was (mostly) solved via things like keyrings, that you could stick key in. Initially, each key was a separate item only a few pixels in size, and when you had a dozen of them in your pack, finding the one you needed was a total chore.
